Rubber plants, also known as Ficus Elastica, are popular houseplants that are easy to care for and can bring a touch of the tropics to any home. Here is a beginner’s guide to nurturing your own rubber plant.

Light

Rubber plants prefer bright, indirect light and can tolerate low light. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as this can cause the leaves to scorch. If you don’t have enough natural light in your home, you can supplement with grow lights.

Watering

Rubber plants prefer to be kept slightly on the dry side. Water your plant when the top inch of soil is dry. Over-watering can cause root rot and lead to the death of your plant. Allow the water to drain through the bottom of the pot and discard any excess water.

Temperature & Humidity

Rubber plants prefer temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). They also prefer higher humidity levels, so if you live in a dry climate, consider misting your plant or placing it on a tray filled with pebbles and water.

Fertilizing

Rubber plants should be fertilized once a month during their growing season (spring and summer). Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at half the recommended strength.

Pruning

Rubber plants can become leggy over time, so it’s important to prune them regularly. Prune your plant in the spring or summer, removing any yellow or dead leaves and stems. This will encourage new growth and keep your plant looking its best.

Following these tips will help you keep your rubber plant healthy and happy. With the right care, your rubber plant can bring a touch of the tropics to your home for years to come.
