Calatheas, or peacock plants and zebra plants, are beautiful houseplants that can bring a touch of the tropics to any home. These plants are low-maintenance and relatively easy to care for, but there are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure that your calatheas thrive.

Light

Calatheas prefer bright, indirect light. If the leaves start to turn yellow or brown, it’s a sign that the plant is getting too much sun. Move it to a spot with less direct sunlight, or provide it with some shade.

Water

Calatheas prefer to be kept on the dry side, so water only when the top inch or two of soil is dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot and other problems, so it’s important to make sure the soil isn’t too wet. Allow the water to drain through the pot, then empty any excess water from the saucer.

Fertilizer

Calatheas don’t need a lot of fertilizer, but you can give them a light dose of liquid fertilizer every few months during the growing season. Make sure to dilute the fertilizer according to the instructions on the package.

Temperature

Calatheas prefer warm temperatures, and will suffer if exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Keep your plant away from drafts and cold windows, and make sure it’s not in a spot that gets too hot.

Humidity

Calatheas prefer high humidity. To increase the humidity around your plant, you can mist it regularly or set the pot on a tray of wet pebbles. You can also use a humidifier to keep the air around your plant moist.

Pruning

Calatheas can become leggy and overgrown if they’re not pruned regularly. To keep the plant looking its best, trim off any yellow or brown leaves and cut back any long, spindly stems.

With a bit of care, your calatheas will thrive and bring a touch of the tropics to your home. Keep these tips in mind and your peacock plant and zebra plant will be happy and healthy.
